Even if it was still updated regularly it's just a pain to waste 120 GB when all you need is a lightweight client for Remote Play that could run just fine from a 8 GB USB stick. Once paired, all you need is a gamepad and you can connect to any (paired) host using only a couple clicks.Īs for SteamOS, it feels outdated (and abandoned) and requires a partition of at least 120 GB to install (most of it is free space to install linux games). Devices using Steam Link are registered in the Remote Play tab of your account and don't waste an additional device slot in Family Sharing. Steam Link is lightweight and pairs to hosts using PIN (much less annoying that full password/SteamGuard, and you only need to register once).

This also makes the device register in the Family Sharing tab of every account used.

Also you pretty much need to logoff/logon (and type password/SteamGuard manually everytime which becomes really annoying) when you want to stream to a different host using a different Steam account. I already use Steam Link on original hardware and RPi, but I have a couple Win10/Ubuntu (intel 圆4, faster hardware) boxes I would like to add a Steam Link app to.įor those asking: yes the full Steam client also supports streaming between hosts (I also use that), but there are differences.Įvery device you install the full Steam client on is registered in the Family Sharing tab of your account (allows installing games from your library on this device, which is not what we want here).
